New Delhi: Three minors were apprehended for allegedly pelting stones at women who were on their way to perform religious rituals in Haryana’s Nuh town, the police said.

Police said that the apprehended were madrasa students. They did not confirm whether it was a case of communal violence. Nine women were injured as per a list made by authorities of Nuh district.

Nuh Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarniya confirmed to ThePrint that the three minors were apprehended in connection with the stone-pelting that happened Thursday evening.

People from Hindu and Muslim communities came out after the news of stone-pelting spread but were dispersed quickly, the police said, adding that the law and order in the town was “normal”.

The communally-sensitive district of Nuh had earlier seen riot in August. The violence had then spread to neighbouring Gurugram.

An FIR was lodged in the early hours of Friday after the police received complaints that stones were pelted at women near the ‘Badi Masjid’ area of Nuh town.

In the FIR, the complainant, Ramavtar, also alleged that casteist slurs were made against the women. The FIR mentioned the time of incident between 7 pm and 7.30 PM on Thursday evening. ThePrint has a copy of the FIR.

The police slapped Sections 148 (rioting), 149 (unlawful assembly), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint) of the IPC and Section 3 of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against unidentified accused.

“Today was the occasion of ‘kua pujan’ for my younger brother’s son. While women of our families were passing by Badi Masjid and madrasa, stones were pelted at them and they were subjected to casteist abuse,” Ramavtar alleged in the FIR.

Nuh Police spokesperson Krishan Kumar told ThePrint that the three minors aged between 9 and 12 years were produced before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) for questioning.

Kumar said the maulvi of the madrasa was questioned by the police and added that there were not many students as Thursday was a holiday.

The maulvi informed that three students may have done “something wrong” and assured that no such incident will take place in future, the police spokesperson added.
