New Delhi: Two Delhi University students were allegedly stalked and harassed by a group of men travelling in an SUV in the city’s Vijay Nagar area on Wednesday night. One of the students, Adwaeta Singh, an ABVP member pursuing her first year of postgraduate studies at Hindu College, alleged that one of the men was a student of the university’s Law Faculty and identified him as Naman Choudhary.
The incident took place the same day students of Lady Shri Ram College held a protest over concerns about women’s safety in the capital following the alleged rape of a 17-year-old girl in a South Delhi park.
In a video posted on Instagram, Singh said she was walking with a female friend in Vijay Nagar around 9.30 pm when the men began harassing them. “They rolled down the SUV’s window and started passing comments on us. When we asked them to behave and leave, they verbally abused us further.”
She further said that after she and her friend walked away, they realised the SUV was following them. “They kept following us and, when we stopped to record them, the vehicle also stopped and they tried to pull us inside. Moments later, when my friend took out her phone to record, they drove away.”
Singh further alleged that after the incident, she went to four police stations to lodge a complaint, but the police did not register an FIR. “At Maurice Nagar police station, they informed us that it was not under their jurisdiction. My friends and I then went to three other police stations and faced the same. For over three hours, not a single police station filed an FIR in the matter,” she said.
According to the Home Ministry’s 2013 notification, a police officer is duty-bound to register a case based on information disclosing a cognizable offence, and an FIR must be registered irrespective of territorial jurisdiction. Singh alleged that Choudhary, one of the men in the vehicle, was related to a Delhi Police station house officer and was influencing the case.
Refuting Singh’s claim, DCP (North West) Akanksha Yadav said an FIR was registered at Mukherjee Nagar police station. “It is submitted that on the intervening night of 23/24.09.2026, a written complaint regarding an eve-teasing incident near Hakikat Park, Mukherjee Nagar, Delhi, at about 9.30 pm was received from a female complainant.”
She added that during the inquiry, the car bearing registration number DL11CF4447, allegedly involved in the incident, was traced to its registered owner. It was found that Naman Choudhary, son of Anil Kumar, was driving the vehicle along with two to three other persons. “Accordingly, an FIR was lodged under BNS sections specifying punishment on stalking, any action with the intention to insult a woman’s modesty, and common intention against the accused,” the DCP said.
