Panaji, Apr 19 (PTI) Nearly 1,000 police personnel will be deployed for security during the annual Shree Lairai Devi Festival set to commence at Shirgao village in Goa on Monday, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has said.

At least six persons were killed in a stampede during the festival at the Shree Lairai Devi temple last year. Several thousand devotees throng the temple at Shirgao village in North Goa to participate in the festival.

CM Sawant held a meeting with senior officers from the district administration, police department and temple committee on Saturday evening and reviewed the preparations and security arrangements at the festival site.

Sawant told reporters that around 1,000 policemen would be deployed for security during the festival, and six different zones were created to ensure law and order. Each zone would be headed by a Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) level officer, he said.

If anyone is found to be creating chaos, indulging in mischief or fighting during the festival, they would be immediately evicted from the venue, Sawant said. He appealed to people to cooperate with the authorities for the smooth conduct of the annual festival.

Sawant reviewed preparations made by the police, district administration, health officials and fire services.

He appealed to authorities to remain vigilant to prevent any untoward incident, ensuring the festival is held peacefully without disputes or disturbances. PTI RPS GK
