New Delhi: The Kartarpur Corridor, which was first proposed by former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1999, was inaugurated Saturday. Despite tensions in India-Pakistan ties, after the Pulwama attack, the Balakot airstrikes and the scrapping of Article 370, the Kartarpur negotiations continued. The historic corridor links Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan’s Kartarpur, where Sikhism found Guru Nanak Dev had spent the last years of his life, with Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Gurdaspur district of Punjab in India. It also provides visa-free access to Sikh pilgrims. At the inauguration, Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked his Pakistani counterpart Imran Khan for understanding India’s sentiment.
