New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Prime Minister Narendra Modi made their way to Rajghat in New Delhi Monday morning to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of Bapu’s 154th birth anniversary. An interfaith prayer service was also held at the memorial where a black marble platform marks the spot where Gandhi was cremated on 31 January, 1948.
In a post on X, Modi — who reached Rajghat around 8 am, offered floral petals and bowed before the memorial — wrote that Gandhi’s timeless teachings “continue to illuminate our path” and motivate “humankind to further the spirit of unity and compassion”.
Later in the day, Modi also paid tribute to Lal Bahadur Shastri at the Vijay Ghat memorial in the national capital on the occasion of the former prime minister’s 119th birth anniversary. “His (Shastri’s) unwavering commitment to India’s progress and his leadership during challenging times remain exemplary,” he wrote on X.
