New Delhi: Thousands of social media users have shared a Facebook post that suggests a pregnant woman was tied to a tree and beaten up by police in Assam.

The accompanying text blames the state’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government for unleashing barbarity on people.

The post in Bangla reads, “Assam is a state where the BJP rules and punishes. They tied a pregnant woman to a tree and abused her all day long. If we don’t call BJP barbaric after this, when will we?”

The post received more than 6,000 shares and 400 reactions on Facebook. However, the photo is actually from Bangladesh, taken a year ago.

Uniform makes it clear

The photo was part of a report published in Bangla Tribune in August 2017 that said the woman was beaten up by police on the suspicion of smuggling cows.

The uniform of the woman constable – as well as the badge on her sleeve – prove that the picture is from Bangladesh.
