New Delhi: A roughly two-minute video, purportedly showing a group of people brutally attacking a bunch of protesters in the middle of a busy street, is being widely shared on social media with many claiming the tussle was between the public and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers in Bihar.
The clip, which has been reshared on Twitter over a thousand times and viewed over 1 lakh times, was originally posted on the microblogging site on 9 August by an unverified account Брат . In the tweet, the account holder inferred that the clashes were a consequence of JD(U) breaking its alliance with the BJP and joining hands with the RJD.

On the same day, a news editor at the website The Jamia Times, Ahmed Khabeer, reuploaded the video with the same original caption: “It’s not even one day the alliance ended and BJP receives its share of Hatred in return. #BiharPolitics.” Khabeer’s account is a verified handle.

The video has also been shared on Facebook by an account, Bluffmaster Modi, with a different yet incorrect context. The Facebook post went up on Friday with the caption in Hindi, saying it was “just the beginning” and “the destruction of Lanka was yet to come”.
The post, which has over 54,000 views and 3,600 likes, also implied that the incident was a result of the rising inflation in the country and warned that India was heading towards a similar financial crisis that Sri Lanka witnessed.
Fact-check
This video isn’t from Bihar but from West Bengal and it wasn’t the general public but Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers who were charging toward a group of BJP protesters. Upon listening to the clip carefully, one can also hear announcements being made on the loudspeaker in Bengali and people arguing in the same language.
According to media reports, the clip was recorded during an incident that took place on 6 August in Hooghly, showing clashes breaking out between the TMC and BJP workers.
