New Delhi: India’s R value has further increased this week and is now very close to 1 — a situation that could lead to a rise in active cases once again.

The R value has been on a rise for the last few weeks. It was 0.97 last week.

R or effective reproduction number is an estimate of how fast the infection is spreading. The number describes how many people on average are likely to get infected from a Covid positive person. R has to be kept below 1 for the pandemic to come to an end.

“India’s overall active cases are fluctuating too much at the moment to get a reliable estimate, but data is pointing to a value close to 1. It may tip over either way in the coming few days,” Sitabhra Sinha, a researcher at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, who has been tracking the R value since the beginning of the pandemic, told ThePrint.

Sinha’s model to estimate R cannot give a robust estimate when the value is too close to 1. Several Indian states are on that tipping point this week.

The situation is most worrying in Kerala, which currently has the highest number of active cases. The state’s R is similar to last week at 1.11. According to Sinha, this means that Kerala is likely to remain at the top spot (in terms of active cases) for the next couple of weeks.

Sinha said that Uttarakhand was another state of concern, where R increased from 0.95 last week to close to 1 this week.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s R is estimated to be still below 1, but it has increased from last week’s 0.90 to very close to 1 this week.

R for Northeast states

The R value for most states in the Northeast is above 1.

“The Northeast continues to have a very bad situation with most states having R more than 1,” Sinha said.

Tripura has R lower than 1. The R in the state has reduced from last week’s 1.17. Similarly, Manipur, where R was 1.24 last week, now has R at 0.98.

Meghalaya’s R increased from 1.08 last week to 1.17 this week.

Sikkim’s R dropped from 1.2 last week to 1.17 this week, Nagaland’s R came down from 1.1 last week to 1.09 this week, and Mizoram’s R is the same as last week at 1.27.

Among major cities, Delhi has R very close to 1. R in Delhi has been steadily increasing since 25 May when the value was 0.43. Last week, Delhi’s R had increased to 0.84 from 0.66 the week before.

Pune’s R is now over 1. All other cities, however, have R below 1. Bengaluru’s R is at 0.72, Chennai’s at 0.94, and Kolkata’s at 0.86. Meanwhile, the R for Mumbai is at 0.74.
