India’s active Covid cases below 1.5 lakh again, nearly 50% of new infections in Maharashtra

New Delhi: India saw a decline in its Covid-19 active case count Tuesday, after reporting a steady increase over the past one week. More than 10,000 new infections were detected from across the country in the last 24 hours, with Maharashtra accounting for nearly half of these infections.

As many as 10,584 people tested positive for Covid-19 across the country in the last 24 hours. Nearly 50 per cent of the new cases were detected from Maharashtra.

On Tuesday, the active cases dropped to 1,47,306. Active cases in India had been increasing over the past week, but in the last 24 hours, the numbers fell again.

India has reported 78 Covid-19 deaths in the last 24 hours. This takes the country’s overall Covid-19 death toll to 1,56,463. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Delhi and West Bengal have recorded the highest number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

The overall fatality rate for India is now 1.42. Punjab’s case fatality rate (CFR) is 3.22, the highest in the country. Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s CFR, the second highest, has reduced to 2.45 and Sikkim’s fatality rate is 2.20.

A total of 6,78,685 Covid-19 tests were conducted across 1,220 government laboratories and 1,173 private laboratories in the last 24 hours. Over 21 crore tests have been carried out in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

The daily test positivity rate for India has reduced to 1.5 per cent in the last 24 hours. The overall positivity rate, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, reduced 5.1 per cent.

As many as 13,255 Covid-19 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of Covid-19 recoveries since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,07,12,665.

A total of 1,14,24,094 vaccine doses have been administered in India so far. These include 64,25,060 first doses to healthcare workers, 11,15,542 second doses to healthcare workers, and 38,83,492 first doses to frontline workers.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 1,10,16,434 people in India have been infected with Covid-19. The largest number of cases reported so far are from Maharashtra, followed by Kerala and Karnataka.

States with the highest active cases

Active cases in Kerala reduced to 55,752 Tuesday, with the 2,212 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. A total of 10,36,869 cases of Covid-19 have been detected from the state since the beginning of the pandemic.

With 16 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 death toll rose to 4,105 Tuesday.

Maharashtra reported 5,210 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, the state’s active cases further increased to 54,306.

A total of 51,806 people in the state have died of Covid-19 so far, with 18 Covid-19 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Active cases in Karnataka fell to 6,080 Tuesday, with 317 new Covid-19 cases reported in the last 24 hours. This brings the total infections detected in the state since the beginning of the pandemic to 9,48,466.

With five deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s death toll rose to 12,299.

Tamil Nadu recorded 4,091 active Covid-19 cases as of Tuesday, with 449 new cases of Covid-19 detected in the last 24 hours. A total of 8,48,724 people in the state have so far been infected with Covid-19.

With six deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 death toll rose to 12,466.

West Bengal reported 148 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases detected from the state so far to 5,73,910.

Active cases in the state fell to 3,440 Tuesday. With two deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 death toll rose to 10,251.
