India’s daily Covid cases rise above 47,000, 550 deaths in 24 hours

New Delhi: The number of daily Covid-19 cases has once again increased, rising to above 47,000 today. This is the second day in a row that new cases have increased in India.

The number of deaths also increased today with the country registering more than 500 daily fatalities for two days in a row.

Daily cases

The number of Covid-19 cases reported in the last 24 hours increased, for the second consecutive day, to 47,905.

Active cases

The total active Covid-19 case count in India declined further to 4,89,294 Thursday.

This accounts for 5.63 per cent of the total coronavirus cases detected in the country since the beginning of the pandemic. India’s active cases account for about 3 per cent of the active cases across the world today.

Number of deaths

In the last 24 hours, the number of people who died from Covid-19 rose to 550 — an increase from 512 Wednesday.

India’s Covid-19 death toll now stands at 1,28,121, which is a little over 10 per cent of the global toll.

India’s overall case fatality rate stands at 1.48.

Punjab’s case fatality rate continues to be the highest in the country at 3.14. Maharashtra and Gujarat also have high CFR of 2.63 and 2.06, respectively.

Kerala, the state with the second-highest burden of active cases, maintains a low CFR of 0.34.

Daily tests

Over the last 24 hours, 11,93,358 Covid-19 tests have been carried out across 1,143 government laboratories and 942 private laboratories in the country.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, India has carried out a total 12,19,62,509 tests in the country.

Positivity rate

The test positivity rate for India increased to 4.01 per cent in the last 24 hours from 3.8 Wednesday. The overall TPR for India, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is about 7.1 per cent.

Recovered cases

In the last 24 hours, 52,718 people have recovered from Covid-19. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 80,66,501 people have recovered from the infection in India.

India has the highest number of Covid-19 recoveries, accounting for over a fifth of the total recoveries in the world.

Total cases

In India, 86,83,916 people have tested positive for Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic — the second highest in the world after the US.

High-burden states

Maharashtra has registered 17,31,833 coronavirus cases in the country since the beginning of the pandemic, making it the state with the highest number of cases.

Of these, 89,018 cases are currently active while 45,560 people have died from the disease.

In the last 24 hours, 4,907 people have tested positive for the virus while 125 people have died from the infection.

In Karnataka, the total number of Covid-19 cases detected so far stands at 8,53,796.

As many as 2,584 new Covid-19 cases were detected in the state in the last 24 hours. The total active cases in the state stands at 30,762.

The total death toll of the state currently stands at 11,453, with 23 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Tamil Nadu has 18,655 active Covid-19 cases as of Thursday, while the state’s death toll has risen to 11,415.

Over the last 24 hours, 2,184 people have tested positive for the disease, while 28 people have died.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 7,50,409 people have tested positive for the virus in the state.

In Andhra Pradesh, 6,828 people have died from Covid-19, with 14 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

The state has had a total of 8,47,977 cases so far, of which 20,915 are still active.

In the last 24 hours, 1,732 new Covid cases have been detected in the state.

In Uttar Pradesh, as many as 1,911 new Covid cases have been reported in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number infections in the state since the beginning of the pandemic to 5,03,159.

The state’s death toll now stands at 7,281, with 20 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

As of Thursday, the state has 22,562 active Covid-19 cases.

Maharashtra’s test positivity rate (TPR) has once again increased to 8.2 per cent. A TPR above 10 indicates that the state is not conducting enough testing.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh continues to have the lowest TPR among the worst affected states of 1.2 per cent.
