Daily Covid deaths drop below 200, test positivity rate falls to 2.1%

New Delhi: While the total active cases in India continue to fall, Kerala and Maharashtra remain states of concern as both have reported an increase in the number of active cases.

Meanwhile, daily Covid deaths are once again below 200, with the highest number of deaths reported in Maharashtra.

India’s effective reproduction number (R) has increased slightly to 0.92 this week from 0.91 last week. R needs to be sustained below 1 for active cases to keep declining.

In the last 24 hours, India recorded 15,590 new cases of Covid-19. More than 35 per cent of these were reported from Kerala — the state with the highest number of active cases.

India’s total active case count declined to 2,13,027 in the last 24 hours, which is now just over 2 per cent of the total cases the country has recorded so far.

In the last 24 hours, 191 people with Covid-19 died in the country, bringing the death toll in India to 1,51,918.

India’s overall case fatality rate is now 1.44. Punjab’s case fatality, which is the highest in the country, stands at 3.22. Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s CFR reduced to 2.53. Sikkim has the third-highest fatality rate at 2.16.

The number of Covid-19 tests carried out, in the last 24 hours, dropped to 7,30,096 across 1,203 government laboratories and 1,125 private laboratories in India.

A total of 18,49,62,401 Covid-19 tests have been carried out in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

The test positivity rate reduced slightly to 2.1 per cent in the last 24 hours as the number of tests conducted reduced. The overall test positivity, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, has also reduced to 5.6 per cent.

As many as 15,975 Covid-19 patients recovered across India in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of recoveries in the country to 1,01,62,738.

As many as 1,05,27,683 people have been infected with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic in India. The highest number of cases, so far, have been reported from Maharashtra, followed by Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

States with highest active cases

Kerala reported a rise in its active cases for the third day in a row. With 5,490 new cases in the last 24 hours, the state’s active case count rose to 66,713.

Kerala has reported a total of 8,31,259 cases of Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. Of these, 3,392 people have died, with 19 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Maharashtra also saw an increase in its active case count for the second day in a row. Active cases in the state rose to 53,744 with 3,556 new cases detected in the last 24 hours.

The state reported 70 deaths, taking the total death toll to 50,291 since the beginning of the pandemic.

In Uttar Pradesh, active cases declined to 10,080 with 501 new cases of Covid-19 reported in the last 24 hours.

So far, as many as 5,95,142 people in the state have been infected with Covid-19. Of these, 8,543 people have succumbed to the infection, with 14 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Karnataka’s active case count fell to 8,747. With 408 new cases of Covid-19 detected in the last 24 hours, the total number of cases in the state rose to 9,29,960 — the second-highest after Maharashtra.

The state reported three deaths in the last 24 hour, bringing the death toll to 12,155.

In Chhattisgarh, 607 people tested positive for Covid-19 in the past 24 hours. Active cases in the state reduced to 7,418.

A total of 2,92,091 people have been infected in the state since the beginning of the pandemic.

Of these, 3,537 people have died of Covid-19, of which 10 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.
