Active cases cross 2.1-lakh mark for first time since January, positivity rate at 3.7%

New Delhi: Active cases in India have crossed 2.1 lakh for the first time since January. The rise in cases is because more than 26,000 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours, which is the highest daily case count this year.

The daily test positivity rate has also increased to 3.7 per cent.

Daily cases

In the last 24 hours, 26,291 new cases of Covid-19 have been reported across the country. This is the highest single day spike in cases since 20 December.

Active cases

Active cases in India have increased significantly to 2,19,262. The highest number of active cases are being reported from Maharashtra, followed by Kerala, Punjab, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

In the last 24 hours, 118 Covid-19 deaths were reported across the country. The overall death toll in India is now 1,58,725.

Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Delhi and West Bengal have recorded the highest number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

The overall fatality rate for India dropped to 1.39, as the active cases increased. Punjab’s case fatality reduced to 3.07, which is still the highest in the country. Maharashtra’s CFR reduced to 2.28, while Sikkim’s fatality rate is 2.18.

A total of 7,03,772 Covid-19 tests were conducted in 1,225 government laboratories and 1,187 private laboratories across the country. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 22,74,07,413 tests have been carried out in the country.

Positivity rate

With an increase in the number of cases, the test positivity increased to 3.7 per cent in the last 24 hours — the highest since November. The overall positivity rate, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is 5 per cent.

Recovered cases

As many as 17,455 patients have been discharged across India in the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of recoveries since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,10,07,352.

Daily vaccinations

A total of 2,99,08,038 vaccine doses have been administered in India so far, with 1,40,880 doses administered in the last 24 hours. Of these, 2,44,52,385 are first doses, while 54,55,653 have received the second doses of the vaccine.

As many as 1,13,85,339 people in India have been infected with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. The largest number of cases so far have been reported from Maharashtra, followed by Kerala and Karnataka.

States with highest active cases

Since yesterday, Maharashtra reported 16,620 new cases of Covid-19. Active cases in the state have increased to 1,27,480.

A total of 23,14,413 cases of Covid-19 have been reported from the state since the beginning of the pandemic. Of these, 52,861 people have died, with 50 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

In Kerala, active Covid-19 cases reduced to 29,777, with 1,792 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. This has taken the total number of cases to 10,91,270 in the state.

With 15 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 death toll increased to 4,396.

In Punjab, active cases increased to 11,550, with 1,792 new cases of Covid-19 reported in the last 24 hours.

A total of 1,97,755 people in the state have been infected with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. With 20 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid death toll increased to 6,072.

Karnataka reported 934 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, taking active cases in the state to 8,383. A total of 9,60,272 cases have been reported from the state.

With three deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the death toll increased to 12,390.

In Tamil Nadu, active cases increased to 4,870, with 759 new cases of Covid-19 detected in the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of cases detected from the state to 8,59,726.

The state reported four deaths in the last 24 hours, which takes the Covid-19 death toll to 12,547.
