New Delhi: Mahnoor Safdar, the daughter of Pakistan Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, is set to tie the knot on Saturday. But the wedding has Pakistanis worried. Many have asked: how much tax money will the first family of Punjab now spend?
Mahnoor is not a public figure and her wedding is being kept under the wraps. The only known detail, according to a report in Dawn, is that Mahnoor’s has been arranged with a prominent business family. The Sharif family too have not divulged any details of the wedding yet.
The last wedding in the family was that of Maryam Nawaz’s son, Junaid Safdar. It was discussed for weeks — from the opulence to her looks overshadowing the bride, Punjab minister Marriyum Aurangzeb’s facelift and the bride’s Sabysachi lehenga. Mahnoor’s look at the wedding was scrutinised too, for wearing a Faraz Manan saree that was earlier draped by Deepika Padukone for an event.
Last week, Maryam Nawaz’s trip to London to attend her daughter’s graduation ceremony in SOAS also caused a furore, with the Opposition questioning the use of a Punjab government aircraft for a private family event. Pakistan minister Azma Bokhari, however, swiftly defended Maryam and said that her expenses were all paid personally and did not involve state money.
Yet, Opposition leaders continued to criticise the chief minister over her use of the official aircraft. PTI leader Moonis Elahi linked the controversy to rising fuel costs and in a post on X wrote, “Petrol is Rs 133 more expensive than the actual price, diesel is Rs 122 more expensive than the actual price. The cost of #MadamThiefMinister‘s £11 million luxury jet for “holidays” in London, which was supposed to be covered by Shehbaz Sharif’s fruitless tours.”

Meanwhile, Pakistanis have other concerns. Many claimed that another Sharif family wedding meant another event where their tax money will be wastefully spent.

Pakistanis also find it hard to believe that the wedding would be without spectacle. “It’s not possible to keep this a private family affair—ultimately, there has to be some drama attached to this marriage too. How else will it be served up to the public on a silver platter if there’s no spectacle? Ultimately, the respected lady has to step forward once again playing the role of the bride,” an X user said. Another jokingly asked, “Will Modi join?”
