New Delhi: A new Game of Thrones video game is coming in 2027. Called Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, it will let players build armies, fight battles and decide who gets to sit on the Iron Throne.
The game is being developed by Australian company PlaySide Studios and is based on the HBO series. It’s a real-time strategy game, meaning players control entire armies instead of a single character. They’ll have to recruit soldiers, gather resources and fight for control of different parts of Westeros.
There are four sides to choose from: House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen and the White Walkers, led by the Night King. Each has its own advantages. The Lannisters have money and can borrow even more to build their armies. The Targaryens will have dragons.
“You don’t just start with a dragon, and you don’t start with wildfire. These are things you have to work toward over the course of a game,” McMahon told But Why Tho at Gamescom.
The game doesn’t follow the story of the television show exactly. Characters from different seasons will appear together, including some who died long before others were introduced. And the ending is entirely up to the player.

War of Westeros
Several familiar characters are returning, including Jon Snow, Robb Stark, Jaime and Tywin Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen, Arya Stark, Gregor Clegane (the Mountain) and the Night King. Even the Stark direwolves Ghost and Grey Wind will be in the game.
The characters also have special abilities. For example, Arya Stark can kill an enemy, steal their face and use their powers for a short time. In the show, Arya killed the Night King during the Battle of Winterfell. But in the game, he could end up winning the war and sitting on the Iron Throne.
“You could replay a faction’s campaign multiple times and have it play out differently, with different endings,” McMahon told gaming website 80 Level.
There will be online battles with up to four players, who can either team up or fight against one another. There’s also an option to play against the computer.
PlaySide released a gameplay trailer in August, showing some of the battles, dragons and returning characters.
War for Westeros was announced in June 2025 and was originally supposed to come out in 2026. But in July this year, PlaySide pushed the release to early 2027 to give the developers more time to finish it.
The game will be available on PC through Steam. There’s no confirmed release date or price yet. PlaySide has also opened registrations for a beta test planned for later this year, so some players will get to try it before the full release.
