New Delhi: More than 50,000 Swiggy delivery partners across India have filed their Income Tax Returns, or ITRs, through the company’s delivery partner app, with refund claims totalling Rs 6.5 crore. Swiggy said on Thursday that more than one-third of those who filed their returns were first-timers. The job as a delivery partner at Swiggy brought them into the formal financial system.

The formal financial record can be useful when they need to access services such as bank loans, credit, renting a house or other financial products. For many gig workers, the earnings come from multiple sources. It may also vary from month to month. In such cases, having an ITR can serve as an official record of their income.

This can make it easier to demonstrate their financial capacity when applying for a loan, signing a rental agreement or accessing other formal financial services.

‘Vital stepping stone for gig workers’

The initiative is, therefore, not just about helping delivery partners claim tax refunds, but also about helping them establish a financial history that could be useful beyond the tax-filing season.

“For our delivery partners, long-term stability is about building a recognised financial identity. By enabling our delivery partners to file their ITRs seamlessly, we are helping thousands of them become a part of the formal economy. This is a vital stepping stone that establishes their credit footprint, ultimately unlocking doors to a range of financial services that can transform the future for them and their families,” said Saurav Goyal, Chief Operating Officer, Food Marketplace, Swiggy.

Swiggy partnered with leading tax-tech platforms ClearTax, TaxBuddy and Dvara Money to offer a holistic and friction-free experience. Swiggy had previously partnered with industry leaders like the National Stock Exchange and Zerodha to provide financial training and make it easier for our partners to invest for their future.

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
