New York’s media dominance is growing. 1 in every 12 US newspaper jobs based in Manhattan

In his analysis of the US Bureau of Labor Statistics data, Justin Fox found that the US media has undergone what he called “New York-ification”, where the concentration of media houses has grown in the state.

New Delhi: From major English daily The New York Times to broadcast giants like ABC and Fox, New York City has long been the American media hub. And over the years, its dominance has only increased, with 1 out of every 12 US newspaper jobs based in Manhattan in 2025, according to an analysis by Bloomberg columnist Justin Fox.

Among all US states, New York has not only earned the reputation of being the country’s media capital but also that of the world. A 2019 Pew research study suggests that 12 per cent of all US newsroom employees are based in New York. These include editors, reporters, photographers, and videographers.

In his analysis of the US Bureau of Labor Statistics data, Fox found that the US media has undergone what he called “New York-ification”, where the concentration of media houses has grown in the state.

Fox pointed out that employment at newspapers has taken a hit across the US due to the rise of new media. But in New York, these media houses are doing better than others.

‘A disproportionately large share’

Examining data from the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, Fox highlighted that Manhattan, which is a borough in New York City, is home to just 0.5 per cent of the US population and yet it accounted for 8.3 per cent of all newspaper jobs in the country in 2025.

“When you consider that most newspaper journalists outside the city are writing for local audiences and the only truly successful national newspapers — the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal — are based in Manhattan, its share of influence on the national discourse is surely greater than that,” he wrote.

In addition, over 12 per cent of jobs in the new category of web search portals, archives, and portals are also based in Manhattan, the analysis suggested.

Besides New York, Los Angeles and Washington, DC are also home to a “disproportionately large share” of employees working in newsrooms, according to the Pew study cited above.
