Kerala Tourism and Sam Altman are having a moment on X

The OpenAI CEO’s X post triggered curiosity among users, with many asking how fast is the new AI chip and whether it is better than Nvidia’s chips.

New Delhi: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman took to X on Wednesday to announce a new chip manufactured by the AI firm, simply describing it as “fast”.

“We made a chip and it is fast,” the post read.

The announcement soon triggered curiosity among users, with many asking how fast is the new AI chip and whether it is better than Nvidia’s chips.

But Altman’s post also elicited an unlikely response from a handle that doesn’t seem to have anything to do with artificial intelligence: Kerala Tourism.

Cheekily replying to Altman’s announcement with a photo of the state’s famed banana chips, the handle wrote, “We made chips and it was crispy!”

The playful interaction garnered mixed reaction online, with one user commenting, “Apt metaphor for the state of manufacturing in Kerala”.

Others found humour in Kerala Tourism’s social media game, with the post drawing attention for its deliberately deadpan response to Altman’s tech announcement.

One user quipped, “Those chips are made without AI”.

“Both can get destroyed if come in contact with water,” a comment read.

Wooing Gen Z

The tourism department’s response comes as state governments and the Centre ramp up their social media engagement with Gen Z using new trends and by embracing their language.

The account cleverly turned a tech announcement into an opportunity to talk about the state’s favourite and familiar culinary gem — banana chips. This cultural transition was not lost on users, with one writing, “Oh lol! Banana or Nano Banana?”

Perhaps Kerala Tourism’s online presence is now Gen Z-approved.

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
