New Delhi, Sep 12 (PTI) “Hanuman Ansh”, a small budget movie based on the life and teachings of spiritual leader Baba Neem Karoli , continued its dream run at the box office by roaring past the Rs 200 crore milestone.
The film, which has surprised box office pundits with its remarkable performance in cinema halls, earned Rs 12.40 crore on Friday, taking its worldwide gross to Rs 205.15 crore, according to trade website Sacnilk. Its net collection of the film stands at Rs 173.63 crore.
Friday marked the 36th day of “Hanuman Ansh” in theatres, yet the film’s collections surpassed the opening-day earnings of “Haiwaan”, the Akshay Kumar-Saif Ali Khan starrer that hit screens the same day.
“Haiwaan”, a thriller directed by Priyadarshan, grossed Rs 3.60 crore in India and earned Rs 1 crore overseas, totalling Rs 4.60 crore worldwide.
Written and directed by Vishal Chaturvedi, “Hanuman Ansh” is a retelling of the life of Uttarakhand’s revered saint Baba Neem Karoli, whose real name was Lakshman Narayan Sharma. The film, which was made on a paltry budget of just Rs 2 crore, follows a grieving young Lakshmi Narayan, who embarks on a spiritual journey in search of God after the death of his mother.
As he travels across North India seeking answers to life, death and human suffering, he eventually transforms into the revered saint Neem Karoli Baba, whose teachings of love, service and compassion touched countless lives.
It features Shobhinaw Satya in the lead role alongside Vihaan Shedge, Chandan K Anand, Purnima Tiwari, Anil Rastogi, Gulshan Pandey and Bhagvandas Patel.
The film, which released in Indian theatres on August 7, opened to modest box office numbers with collections remaining low during its first two weeks before picking up pace on the back of positive word-of-mouth.
Baba Neem Karoli was born around 1900 in a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad district and died in 1973. He was married early and became a wandering hermit.
His devotees include famous names such as Julia Roberts, Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma. Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg also reportedly visited his ashram in Kainchi Dham in the hill state.
