New Delhi: There is a regional contrast in the use of dating apps and matrimonial platforms in India. According to the latest report by India in Pixels, dating apps are more popular in Northeast and South India, while Shaadi.com has a strong presence across much of North and West India.

“We often think of dating apps as one category, but each platform seems to occupy a different niche in India,” read the caption of the Instagram post.

The platform revealed that it used Google Trends data from 2021 to 2026 to map the relative search interest for four platformsTinder, Bumble, Grindr, and Shaadi.comacross states and Union Territories.

Notably, Google Trends measures relative search interest, not the number of users.

India in Pixels assigned a unique colour to each app and used a gradient to represent its popularity across regions in a map of India. Lighter shades indicate the app is used less in a state or UT, while darker tones indicate higher usage.

A regional dating divide

According to the data visualisation platform, Tinder and Grindr attract relatively higher interest across several Northeastern states, while Bumble is most popular around India’s major technology hubs.

Grindr, one of the oldest dating apps in the country, was launched in India in 2009. The platform sees comparatively higher demand in parts of South India, as well as around Punjab and Uttarakhand. In contrast, its popularity is relatively low in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, and several neighbouring states.

But that isn’t unique to Grindr. States such as Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, and Gujarat show relatively low interest in Tinder and Bumble, too. Here, Shaadi.com enjoys significantly higher popularity. The matrimonial platform barely exists in Northeast and South India.
