Mumbai, Oct 3 (PTI) Ajay Devgn’s “Drishyam: The Conclusion”, the final chapter of the crime thriller franchise, made a blockbuster start at the worldwide box office, earning Rs 93 crore on its opening day, the makers said on Saturday.

Directed by Abhishek Pathak, the third and final instalment of the franchise released in theatres on Friday and has received largely positive reviews, with critics highlighting its performances, suspense and twists.

The film sees Devgn return as Vijay Salgaonkar, who once again finds himself in a cat-and-mouse game with the law.

“The high-stakes cat-and-mouse chase between Vijay Salgaonkar (Ajay Devgn) and the law has set the box office roaring, opening with a record-breaking Rs 93 crore worldwide on Day 1.

“Driven by the franchise’s strong recall, positive word of mouth and rave reviews, ‘Drishyam: The Conclusion’ has made a powerful opening, setting new benchmarks at the box office for this genre,” the makers said in a statement.

Besides Devgn, actors Tabu, Shriya Saran, Rajat Kapoor, Ishita Dutta and Mrunal Jadhav also return for the final instalment with Jaideep Ahlawat joining the franchise as Rajveer Singh Tomar, a crime branch officer pursuing the case.

The franchise, adapted from the Mohanlal-starrer Malayalam hit, began with the late filmmaker Nishikant Kamat-directed “Drishyam” in 2015.

The story centres on Vijay Salgaonkar, a cable operator who goes to extraordinary lengths to protect his family after his daughter becomes involved in a crime.

The story continued with the 2022 movie “Drishyam 2”, which emerged as one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of the year.

“Drishyam: The Conclusion” is a Panorama Studios production presented by Star Studio18, and has been written by Pathak, Aamil Keeyan Khan and Parveez Shaikh. PTI RB RB

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
