Bengaluru, Oct 4 (PTI) Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and his deputy G Parameshwara on Sunday expressed their grief over the death of veteran filmmaker Singeetham Srinivasa Rao, saying his demise was an irreparable loss to the film industry.

Rao, who won accolades for his remarkable movies in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Hindi films including ‘Halu Jenu’ ‘Panthulamma’, ‘Mayuri’ and ‘Pushpaka Vimana’, died at Kauvery hospital in Chennai on Saturday night due to age-related ailments. He was 95.

In his message, Shivakumar recalled that Rao gave Kannada cinema a new dimension through his outstanding films and directed popular, critically acclaimed movies starring Dr Rajkumar, including ‘Halu Jenu’, ‘Chalisuva Modagalu’ and ‘Shravana Banthu’.

“Singeetham’s silent film Pushpaka Vimana is a milestone in Indian cinema and a testament to his unique talent. Singeetham, who maintained a close association with the Kannada film industry, remained devoted to cinema until his last breath,” Shivakumar said in his statement.

He prayed for his soul to rest in peace.

Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara, in a post on ‘X ‘, expressed his sorrow.

Parameshwara said Rao had also left an indelible mark on Kannada cinema by directing several popular films starring Dr Rajkumar.

Rao’s close association with Kannada cinema and his contribution to it will always be remembered, he said in his condolence message.

“Singeetham Srinivasa Rao, who was recognised in Indian cinema for decades for his creativity, innovative experiments and distinctive style of storytelling, has left the world of cinema poorer with his demise,” Parameshwara said. PTI GMS ADB

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
