New Delhi: Korean pop band BTS will not be submitting its music for the 2027 Grammy Awards, the members announced via Instagram.
“We have decided not to submit for Grammy consideration this year. We hope our music can be heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language. We thank ARMY and everyone who has always stood by us,” the statement read.
All seven members of the band—Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook—posted the statement on their Instagram stories Wednesday.
The band’s announcement comes a month after the Recording Academy announced a new category, Best Asian Pop Music Performance. The Academy described the category as a way to recognise Asian pop music performances originating from or widely accepted within Asian markets, including Korean pop, Japanese pop, and Chinese pop.
“Awards are presented to the performing artists for recordings featuring meaningful use of one or more Asian languages,” states the Academy’s description of the category.
BTS and the Grammys
BTS has not won a Grammy Award despite receiving five nominations across the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Best Music Video, and Album of the Year (Featured Artist) categories.
The bandmates have also been voting members of the Recording Academy since 2019. Their first Grammy nomination came in 2021 for ‘Dynamite’ in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category, which went to Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande’s ‘Rain on Me’. They were nominated again in the same category in 2022 and 2023. The group also received a nomination for Best Music Video for ‘Yet to Come’ and were recognised as featured artists on Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres, which was nominated for Album of the Year. BTS has also performed at the Grammy Awards three times.
In an interview with Variety in 2020, the members spoke about their admiration for the American music awards, especially the Grammys.
“I grew up watching American award shows, so obviously we all know and I know the importance of the Grammys… It’s a dream anyone working in music has,” Suga said.
RM also shared that striving for the golden gramophone motivated the group to work harder.
“If you’re in music, the Grammy Awards are something that you cannot help but look forward to and set as an eventual goal,” he said.
BTS’ recent comeback album, ARIRANG, topped Billboard’s main album and singles charts. The band is currently on a world tour.
