(Reuters) -Tropical Storm Franklin has formed in the Caribbean Sea, 270 miles (435 km) south-southwest of San Juan, Puerto Rico, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Sunday.

Franklin was carrying maximum sustained wind of 45 mph (75 kmph), the U.S. forecaster said, adding that a tropical storm warning was issued for the south coast of Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

A tropical storm watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area, generally within 48 hours, NHC said.

“A west-northwestward track is expected to continue for the next day or so followed by a sharp turn to the north,” the Miami-based forecaster said. “On the forecast track, Franklin should approach the coast of Hispaniola on Wednesday.”

NHC also said that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area beginning late Tuesday.
