New Delhi: Munna and Kaleen Bhaiya are coming back to take revenge on Guddu Pandit, but on the big screen this time. The teaser of Mirzapur: The Movie was released on Thursday on YouTube, marking the first time an OTT show has been adapted into a feature film.
While the action, “bhaukaal”, and cast of the upcoming movie remain largely the same, the arrival of Jitendra Kumar, popularly known as Jeetu Bhaiya from Kota Factory, and Ravi Kishan comes as a surprise.
The over two-minute teaser shows that the movie follows the timeline laid down by the original show and does not create a new universe. Mirzapur: The Movie is presented by Amazon MGM Studios in collaboration with Excel Entertainment. The film is directed by Gurmeet Singh, written by Puneet Krishna, and produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar.

Small screen to theatre
While this may be a new phenomenon for the Indian entertainment landscape, several foreign web shows have been adapted for the big screen. Movies such as Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible was adapted from a 1960s espionage television series with the same title. The show was directed and produced by Bruce Geller, and ran for seven seasons before returning for two more seasons in 1988. The storyline remained the same in the movie — an undercover against trying to solve the world’s problem — just the gadgets that Tom Cruise uses became more high-tech.
The 2012 action-comedy film 21 Jump Street was inspired by a 1980s show of the same name starring Johnny Depp. Both the film and the show revolved around young cops posing as teenagers to solve cases.
Then the 1993 Oscar-winning film The Fugitive, featuring Harrison Ford, was a big-screen adaptation of a 1960s drama series that starred David Jannesen. Both the stories followed a doctor wrongly accused of murdering his wife, who then goes on a mission to find the real perpetrator.
Mirzapur: The Movie will be released in Hindi and Telugu on 4 September.
