Kolkata, Aug 4 (PTI) Sustainable businesses are no longer a trade-off between profitability and environmental responsibility, Shree Cement chairman Harimohan Bangur said on Tuesday, asserting that investments in green infrastructure have become commercially viable as industry increasingly embraces cleaner technologies.
Speaking at the Leadership & Infra Summit 2026 organised by IISWBM here, Bangur said the days when violating environmental norms offered a commercial advantage were over, with sustainable ventures now emerging as profitable businesses in their own right.
“Environmental infrastructure built for a sustainable future is today as profitable a venture as any,” he said, adding that businesses are increasingly recognising sustainability as a long-term economic opportunity rather than merely a compliance requirement.
At the summit, BJP state spokesperson Debjit Sarkar advocated a shift towards green industrialisation in West Bengal, saying cleaner production processes and efficient resource utilisation should form the backbone of the state’s next phase of industrial growth.
Sarkar said green industry should not be viewed as being at odds with industrial expansion but as a transformation that makes manufacturing more sustainable while creating quality employment.
The discussions also highlighted the role of alternative fuels such as liquefied natural gas, ethanol and hydrogen in transport, alongside digital infrastructure, including 5G connectivity, as part of a broader strategy to strengthen the state’s industrial competitiveness. PTI BSM RG
