New Delhi: To address the major challenges in combating oil spills at sea, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) held a pollution response seminar and mock drill in West Bengal, a PIB press release stated.
The event was organized by the ICG at its headquarters coast guard district no. 8 (west Bengal) in Haldia on May 22-23, 2024. It included key stakeholders from various departments, including oil handling agencies. The drill included a table-top exercise where participants played different simulated scenarios to enhance their response capabilities and promote synergy among all the parties involved.
Pollution response equipment was also demonstrated to the participants, which provided them with practical experience to improve their readiness for environmental emergencies. The commander of the headquarters coast guard district emphasized the importance of coordination and effective execution of the National Oil Spill Disaster Contingency Plan. He also highlighted the collective responsibility to safeguard marine resources and reaffirmed the ICG’s commitment to ensuring safer seas and cleaner coasts.
