Thank you! Animal lovers expect EVERYONE to love them. I don’t love them because I fear them…not by choice of course. Only people who have this fear can relate and understand. What bugs me is neighbors not keeping their dogs under their control or on a leash and let them chase me around my yard and even runs into my garage and house. Very disrespectful. We have fear of dogs and cope with living with neighbors with dogs…yet, most of them expect us to get over the fear and just love their dogs. I disagree. They need to cope with us by simply keeping their dogs away from others if it’s not welcome.
I read through this option piece to try and better understand my friend who has cynaphobia… I don’t think it helped. I have a dog that is such an important part of my mental health and well-being. He is my companion, he makes me feel safe when I’m outside, he helps me never feel alone, and I love him. So when I see my friend terrified, I would never say anything to dismiss her fear, and I always keep my dog away from her, but it really pains me to see my friend who I love be so afraid of this innocent little dog that I love. Also some of the comments here are repulsive, dogs can be a very important part of a person’s life and your judgement is so horrible to witness. I just think there needs to be better discussion for both sides.
More than the dogs, I hate dog lovers! Those idiots are practically human haters. They value dogs more than human being and are thus insensitive towards human safety and values. They have just no sense of cleanliness as well. If they would have, then they would bever touch a dog. I deep study reveals that dog lovers (mis) behave like dogs, after heving their company for long. Stray dog menace is perhaps biggest in India and our stupid leaders and their slave judges are increasing this menace daya by day, which is leading to the killing of more than 20000 people every year and millions of suffering by dog bites and accidents!!

I thank Ms. Taskin for this piece. I feel like this is the first time someone has talked seriously about what I go through every time I’m in close proximity to a dog. And the author is totally right in saying that there is a frustrating tendency of condescension and trivialization in dog-lovers that makes me livid. In this regard, I just remembered an episode from the hit sitcom “Friends” where Chandler claims that he is allergic to dogs and all the rest start ragging on him. I remember I was really mad the first time I saw the episode.
I fear dogs, they disgust me, AND hate them. This doesn’t mean I harm them, but if every dog suddenly succumbed to the Coronavirus I’d really celebrate. They represent filth and chaos and they contribute nothing to the world except to the weird people who can’t form human bonds and mistake for “unconditional love” the fact that their dog sticks around because they feed it. Dogs killed ten or so children in 2019 including infants. People who worship dogs have a mental illness. I don’t understand it, but I know that given enough time, one day it will be explained. There can be no civilized society that allows dogs to menace people the way they do today.
I literally didn’t like you commenting on dog owners not picking up their dogs poop . Because u might have a toilet at home to sit and shit. And this your shit us obviously stored in a septic tank which is ofcourse being picked up by others . And your fear towards dogs should be lessened . Let me help u , u should go to a friend’s house whose dog is friendly . Try to be less scared of dogs when u are near it even if u feel your heart is gonna explode .
