The spyware can be installed by exploiting vulnerabilities in your browser (sending you a link to click) as happebed in case of UAE. To its credit, whatsapp released a fix as soon as it was notified of the vulnerability. The moral of the story is to keep your mobile OS and apps up to date, not install unnecessary apps and not click links other people send you.
