The govt hasn’t done away with APMCs but given farmers the ability to sell outside mandis. Arguments that the ordinance violates the Constitution are flawed.
Farmers can lock in prices and buyers for their produce even before the harvest, and intermediaries can be assured of supply and price at the time of harvest.
Modi govt has made actual legal changes to implement its policy statements on agriculture reforms. It should now plug loopholes to realise their full potential.
The recession this time isn’t driven by inherent weakness in economies or factors like oil shocks. It’s also synchronous. This could quicken India’s recovery.
Resumption of economic activity can lead to a larger number of people falling ill than during the lockdown, and govt needs to make policy based on Indian data.
We saw how confusion in rules about air travel affected passengers. Agencies and authorities should give people adequate notice and allow them to plan.
Economic package assumes people will go back to villages, and rural incomes need to be boosted. Modi govt seems to be trying to give them employment there.
Govt’s 100% sovereign guarantee for uncollateralised MSME loans will encourage borrowers to never pay back, discourage banks from lending to them in future.
Govt & individual behaviours have changed to cope with Covid, and economic behaviour will change too. Agriculture & rural industry could be India’s strength.
Hindenburg issued a response to a show-cause notice from India’s market regulator. Both documents contain new findings on several aspects of the short-seller’s Jan 2023 report on Adani Group.
The testing facilities were proposed to be set up under the Defence Testing Infrastructure Scheme (DTIS), which was launched by the government in May 2020.
Changed reality for Modi govt in its 3rd innings is by no means rise of a new phenomenon. It's a return to old normal where even majorities had to routinely wrestle with storied million mutinies.
This article is blatantly one sided. The perspective of the Chicago school of thought is more than apparent. Nothing about the free market economics of Milton Friedman has ever produced even an iota of a balanced economy. It has left destruction and dictatorships in its wake. Targeting APMCs as the “bad guys” while corporate sector players can play havoc now, is a deliberate diversion of attention from the real problem. The writers are convinced that their ideology works…like the followers of a Mad king, in their case, Friedman. I would ask them to give an example of even one country where open market policies like these have led to a healthy economy in the long run.
I support this ordinance ( law). APMCs were a classic case of regulatory capture.
This statement is funny = “The core of any market law is freedom. “.
Someone from Chicago School says that ??? Really ?
Core of any law is to restrict freedom (in this way or that). Not provide freedom. This restriction is not necessarily bad for the market participants.
I feel like pulling the first 2 volumes of the “law legislation and liberty” off my shelf and sending it to you.
Intermediaries have played their role in food supply chain, today with digital tools, a pool farmer is also enabled enough to know the price of his produce.
APMC laws were enacted to protect him from exploitation. Now it’s APMC’s burial time. RIP APMC. Wait, not yet, it’s (APMC) tail is still wagging inside the market yards, these are nothing but hotspots of corruption.
The imports from china should not be stopped suddenly. Stopping suddenly may damage industries, aggravating problem. It has to be checked/stopped in phases. The Chinese imports has to be taxed . Every month the import tax has to increase 10% till it reaches 100% in tenth month. This will provide time for Indian importers to import from some other country. We need to diversify our imports with other countries. Alternately we need to indigenise all our imports. This will lead to more employment for unemployed Indians. It leads to higher GDP growth. Indian trade deficit with China is around 50 billion U S dollars. Indigeniseing these imports is badly needed for Indian economy. COVID 19 virus manufactured by China has decimated our economy.
Most of the Chinese imports used to be manufactured in India in large scale. pharamaticuel raw materials used to be manufactured in India. Garments, pipes, plastic items , electronic items can be easily manufactured in India, the way it was done before. Manufacturing all China imports is a terrific opportunity for Indian business.Chinese imports kills Indian Indian business . And makes China very rich, at our expense. Chinese imports leads to job loss and poverty for us.
It’s a excellent business opportunity for us. The only thing is, it takes some time for us to execute. Indians need to postpone purchase of mobile phones and many electronic items. If we still need to Import, we can import from some other country.
Very good article with a simple example. This is what supposed to do long back as either the Farmar benefited or the consumers. These intermediaries play havoc. It is really a very good intelligent move by the Government to contain APMCs by giving another option to the Farmers what an idea? well explained in this article wherein most of have not realised this point.
Thanks to The Print for giving a such a fine article.
Completely illogical to have had something like the APMC. It’s bewildering that we have suffered it for 72 years.
It’s obviously the single reason why agriculture in such a terrible state.
We need to get rid of the APMC Act and turn the facility into an open market with space let out on rental basis as required.

If agriculture is to take off then they have to released from protectionism.
They must pay taxes, pay for electricity and water and everything else. No unfair subsidies.
They must have the freedom to sell at their prices, while a minimum support price is maintained.
Market will automatically regulate.
