New Delhi: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday accused business leaders of remaining silent as the Tata Group faces an internal dispute over its leadership, alleging that the organisation was being “criminally destroyed”.
“Tata is being criminally destroyed, and no business leader dares say a word. How long will you stay silent? Until they own you?” Gandhi wrote in a post on X. “Indian business is not Modi and Shah’s plaything. You lack courage. We don’t. We will ensure justice for these crimes,” he said.
Gandhi’s remarks come amid a dispute between Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata and Tata Sons over the reappointment of N. Chandrasekaran as executive chairman of the holding company.
The dispute rises from a 7 September board resolution reappointing N. Chandrasekaran as executive chairman for a fresh five-year term. Noel Tata has contested the reappointment, calling the resolution a “legal nullity” and demanding that Tata Sons delete all references to the extension from its official board minutes and revoke related statutory filings.
On Monday, Noel Tata wrote a letter to Suprakash Mukhopadhyay, Company Secretary and Group Corporate Secretary of Tata Sons, saying the reappointment resolution was moved at the board meeting on 17 September despite the absence of a specific reference to the matter in the agenda circulated to directors.
He also alleged that the company had not provided him with the meeting’s audio and video recordings, the final minutes or a certified copy of the resolution, despite his repeated requests.
“The resolution is void,” Noel Tata stated in the letter, arguing that the reappointment did not comply with the relevant provisions of the Tata Sons’ Articles of Association.
