We shouldn’t grudge people joy in festival season, but there’s a moral hazard with Modi govt’s bonus for 30 lakh central employees. They’re already protected from wage cuts and lay-offs, unlike the private sector. The bonus at taxpayer expense is wrong. Everybody must sacrifice in this economy and fiscal distress.

Warning not enough, EC must ensure parties, Bihar administration don’t flout Covid norms

The Election Commission is right to warn political parties against holding large public rallies during Bihar campaign, defying its Covid-related social distancing conditions. The onus lies with top leaders of parties, but the poll body must also ensure that the state administration stops looking the other way and takes action.

  1. THE SAME LIBERAL GOVERNMENT REFUSED TO GRANT ANNUAL INCREMENT TO EMPLOYEES RETIRING ON 30TH JUNE AFETR SERVING FULL 12 MONTHS FROM 1ST JULY TO 30 TH JUNE NEXT YEAR . VOTE POLITICS IS SUPREME.

  2. Being a govt employee I can say generally news persons don’t exactly know about our salary payments. We are also getting huge pay cuts on different heads like DA. Like any middle class salarieed people we also do expenses which ultimately help various industries during the current situation. Moreover we worked regularly during lockdown by attending our offices which no private job holder didn’t. Although it’s not their fault but we did work & continue to work diligently. So I think it’s our right to get incentives like bonus, which we fought to win.

  3. If everybody “sacrifices” where is the demand going to be built up ? Appalling suggestion . Morsoever in a festive season which is the only hope to cut back on the recession the Indian economy will face this financial year.

  4. I entirely agree with the Print view on Bonus to Govt employees.

It is laughable when somebody says one of the objectives of such largesse to Govt employees is to fuel the economy!

  5. On 28th February 2014, UPA II constituted the seventh pay commission, ahead of time, part of last minute desperation. The new government would have been within its rights to put the process in freeze. It had inherited a troubled economy, and the oil bonanza had not materialised. It could also have found a way to stall OROP, with the pension bill surging remorselessly towards one trillion. The latest decision shows the same extra consideration for its own employees at a time of widespread economic pain. It would be very well received if the redevelopment of Central Vista was put on hold for as long as compensatory cess is being recovered under GST, a rough and ready indicator of fiscal health.
