PM Narendra Modi’s address to the nation to caution people against complacency, especially in the festival season, was well-timed and necessary. Compared to other countries, India has done well in the Covid fight. But quoting Kabir and Ramayana for effective messaging, he reminded citizens that it’s still a long battle.
If one sees what is happening in Europe, complete lockdowns of the sort India entered in late March, in Ireland and Wales, the pandemic shows no signs of ebbing. There is progress on the vaccine. However, the numbers of people involved make it a long drawn out process. The halving of new cases from one lac daily is a hard won reprieve, not to be carelessly tossed away. Our opening up is dictated by economic necessity. Faith related activities should be the last priority.
