Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s motivational talk with gram panchayat members when Covid-19 is penetrating rural hinterlands was instructional and well-timed. He must now go beyond messaging and address livelihood questions concerning the poor and the aspirational class. He must spell out a roadmap to put the economy back on track.

  1. In the land of brokers Modi is bent on destroying that breed without being called a dictator.
The brokerage business did not even spare the PMs and CMs. The expression of remote-control was a dignified way of accepting the reality.

  2. Everyone keeps saying ” get money into the hands of the poor”. The govt has made access to foodgrain and dals at almost no cost. Has put money into accounts by durect transfer. It is true that not everyone has an aadhar linked bank account, but then that is because all the lobbies, vested interests abd self proclaimed activists discouraged people from having these accounts. Now the same people who went to court to prevent use of aadhar are again in court for direction to the govt to distribute cash. How?
You cannot put up a kiosk on the street to dispense cash. Give ideas that enable proper targeting while preventing frauds.

  3. Modi need to do this. He needs to do that. If you have more ideas then his whole team put together why pontificate as if the wisdom of the world lies only with you in the 50 word non sense. Go and win elections. You already have congress support. Modi is not there to satisfy news traders.

    • We should respect the media, whose views, like a rainbow, should reflect the incredible diversity of India. Personally one is not happy with pejorative terms like presstitute which have been used to undercut and undermine the institution as a whole. Consider how India’s place in the global Press Freedoms index continues to sink, now at 142. It should have been much easier to raise this to First World standards than other items which are part of HDI and require large investments. If at all some journalists are to be castigated, a start should be made from the sort who have won temporary reprieve from the apex court.

  4. What the last one month has demonstrated is how tiny state ( financial ) capacity is to deal with a crisis of this magnitude. Depending on donations, including one day salary contributions. Consider how much relief / support the US government is providing households and small businesses. Both the economy and public finances were tottering before Covid 19 struck. There are reports that no defence steals will be signed in this quarter. Payments for existing contracts may be deferred. Six years of neglecting the economy, first omission, then, after November 2016, commission, are coming to a very painful fruition for all but the most well off Indians. Homilies, platitudes, exhortations will not suffice. This is war, not a beautifully choreographed fashion show.
