Macron’s morning jogs through capitals draw attention. Now, Egypt. Pushing a rules-based order in the Mediterranean and Gulf of Aden, France is deepening defence ties with non-Francophone Egypt, Kenya, Ethiopia. Whatever the world order, the French will sell croissants and weapons. For India, it’s better than Chinese or Turkish presence.

Modi should raise fuel prices rather than make an outdated Indira-era appeal

To combat global oil price rise, PM Modi made an outdated appeal to citizens: buy less gold, work from home, avoid foreign trips, imported products. This is straight out of the 1970s Indira Gandhi-era. He should just raise fuel prices instead. Market pricing is the best nudge to lower consumption.
