Justice D.Y. Chandrachud’s description of the Supreme Court’s role as a counter-majoritarian institution is instructive and heartening. It’s incumbent on the apex court to protect the rights of religious and socio-economic minorities, especially when majoritarianism is gaining wider acceptability and traction. Chandrachud should be thanked for voicing the judiciary’s conscience.

Dhami deserves praise for suspending the yatra to give priority to lives. Yogi Adityanath should also step back from misadventure.
