By unequivocally striking down the anonymous electoral bonds, the Supreme Court has again demonstrated why it’s India’s most valuable institution, especially when some others are sadly keeling over. The judges took apart Modi government’s 2017 legal changes that backed these bonds and underlined how destructive anonymous money is for democracy.

The Haldwani demolition needed sensitive and careful handling, which was never there. Encroachment of land for religious structures is a practice across faiths in India — a truly ‘secular’ phenomenon. Demolition of illegal structures is the state’s responsibility. But for it to be fair, all religions must be targeted equally.
