Much of the world has opened up to foreign students who are vaccinated and follow protocols. Beijing’s cussedness, despite its protestations to the contrary, seems to be more political than anything else.

Kannada actor Chetan Kumar Ahimsa might or might not have been right to question the competence of a judge hearing hijab case. For police to arrest him for his questions is indefensible. The judiciary has powers, and a process, to punish contempt. Policemen playing judge defines a police state. Unacceptable.

DMK’s sweep of urban local body polls in Tamil Nadu is an endorsement of CM Stalin’s socio-economic development agenda. Its breach of AIADMK fortress in western districts underlines the opposition’s continuing downslide. AIADMK is struggling in the absence of a charismatic leader like Jayalalithaa. Palaniswami-Panneerselvam’s dual leadership has been ineffective.
