In refusing to interfere with L Victoria Gowri’s appointment as a Madras HC judge, Supreme Court has followed the settled proposition that political views of an appointee cannot be a reason to deny one judgeship. The controversy could have been avoided if there was better transparency in the collegium system.

Bengal Governor Ananda Bose’s efforts to restore cordiality in Raj Bhawan’s relations with government are particularly laudable in the current era. BJP leaders’ jibes at him for praising CM Banerjee are cynical. He is a constitutional functionary, not a party office-bearer. Bose is setting a good example for other governors.
