In these times when we are talking about AI , chat GPT and other related technologies which are supposed to ease some of the work pressure and eliminate repeated work , why are we hearing such news? Why does every survey, be it done by company or by any outside agency talks about the decreasing level of employee satisfaction and increasing level of work pressure. Why is this a problem which is increasing at a rapid pace?

Recent surveys and reports indicate a concerning trend regarding work-related stress in India. According to the GOQii India Fit Report 22-23, a staggering 24% of Indians are struggling with stress, with the current workplace environment and financial instability identified as the top stressors Factors such as long working hours, lack of job security, low wages, and intense competition contribute to the stressful work environment faced by many employees. The impact of stress is not limited to work performance but extends to individuals’ overall health and well-being.

Several factors unique to the Indian work system contribute to work pressures and stress among employees. Long working hours, often exceeding the standard 8-hour workday, can lead to burnout and reduced productivity. Additionally, challenging commutes in major cities, poor work conditions, blurred work-life boundaries, job insecurity, and a lack of mental health awareness further exacerbate stress levels among workers. The combination of these factors creates a high-pressure environment that can significantly impact employees’ mental and physical health.

The detrimental effects of work-related stress on employee well-being are profound. Chronic stress can lead to poor mental health, increased risk of mental health conditions like depression, and even physical health issues. Studies have shown that stress negatively affects work performance, with a significant percentage of Indian workers reporting a decline in productivity due to stress. The inability to cope with work pressures can result in burnout, fatigue, anxiety, and other health complications, ultimately affecting both professional and personal aspects of individuals’ lives.

Recognizing the importance of addressing work pressures is crucial for creating a supportive work environment that prioritizes employee well-being. Employers play a pivotal role in mitigating work-related stress by implementing measures to promote a healthy work-life balance, providing adequate support and resources, and fostering a positive organizational culture. Encouraging open communication, offering mental health support services, and creating opportunities for professional growth and development can help alleviate work pressures and enhance employee satisfaction.

In conclusion, work pressures at the workplace in India pose a significant challenge to employee health and productivity. The high prevalence of stress among Indian workers underscores the urgent need for proactive measures to address this issue. By understanding the root causes of work-related stress, implementing supportive policies, and promoting a culture of well-being, organizations can create a conducive work environment that prioritizes the mental and physical health of their employees. Addressing work pressures is not only beneficial for individuals but also contributes to a more productive and engaged workforce otherwise government can bring in new education policy , new wage code and any law related to work force or human capital , if there concerns are not being addressed then all these laws would end up becoming a chapter in text books only.
