Beijing, Sep 17 (PTI) Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held telephone talks on Thursday ahead of President Xi Jinping’s expected visit to Washington for a summit meeting with his US counterpart Donald Trump next week.
The two sides conducted in-depth discussions focused on high-level exchanges between China and the US, an official press release here said, without mentioning the forthcoming summit meeting between Xi and Trump.
According to reports from the US, the summit between the two Presidents is scheduled to take place on September 24. There has been no mention of dates so far by Beijing.
This will be their second meeting this year.
The US President visited Beijing and held talks with Xi in May.
Trump plans to accord a rare airport reception to Xi by personally receiving him on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews when the Chinese President arrives on September 23, the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported on Thursday. In his phone call with Rubio, Wang noted that over a period of time, China-US relations have generally moved forward along the track of constructive strategic stability established by the two Heads of State, which meets the expectations of the international community.
He emphasised that Head-of-State diplomacy is the “stabilising anchor” of China-US relations, the release said.
Both sides should, in the spirit of equality, mutual respect and mutual benefit, make proper preparations for high-level exchanges in the next stage, enhance communication, advance cooperation, manage differences, respect each other’s core interests, and send a positive message that China and the United States are committed to advancing a constructive and strategically stable relationship and jointly promoting world peace and development, Wang said.
