New Delhi: US President Donald Trump’s gaffe – saying ‘Iceland’ instead of ‘Greenland’ four times– during his address at the World Economic Forum in Davos Wednesday sparked a meme fest on social media. Among those to post stinging jokes on it were ‘Iceland Cricket’.

After Trump’s speech, the country’s official cricket team account said on X that Iceland is a “volcanic rock in the north Atlantic surrounded by insignificant islands that don’t play cricket”. It went on to add sarcastically that the confusion would be “economically devastating”.

In another post, Iceland Cricket wrote: “The orange one says that Iceland has already cost the US a lot of money. But we have peace, gender equality, and cricketers who play for the love of the game. We have no need to seize any overseas players in the interests of our batting security.”

The posts came as Trump has repeatedly pushed to take over Greenland for US national security, in calls that intensified after American forces took Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro into custody after a Caracas military operation.

At Davos, Trump ruled out taking Greenland by military force following repeated criticism and defiance from European nations.

But he mistakenly called Greenland “Iceland” at least four times during his address. “They’re (Europeans) not there for us, on Iceland, that I can tell you. I mean, our stock market took the first dip yesterday because of Iceland. So, Iceland has already cost us a lot of money,” the US President said.

While criticising Europe’s economic path and calling the US economy “booming”, Trump accused NATO allies of undermining American national security. “We want a piece of ice for world protection, and they won’t give it,” he remarked.

The Trump administration’s continuous push to take control of Nuuk from Denmark, a NATO ally, has strained relations between Brussels and Washington.
