New Delhi: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was forced to resign earlier in the day, is travelling to London, ThePrint has learnt.
Government sources told ThePrint that within minutes of realising that the situation had gone out of hand, Hasina Monday reached out to New Delhi seeking safe passage into Indian airspace, a request that was immediately accepted.
Sources in the know said Hasina wanted to address the nation back in Dhaka but was told by authorities that it won’t be possible and that it was time she stepped down.
She was also offered a military helicopter by the Bangladesh Army to fly her out of her official residence in Dhaka which was stormed by protesters moments after she left the capital city. Hasina was then flown to an army air base in Bangladesh from where she is said to have boarded a military transport aircraft.
Hasina’s team, it is learnt, contacted Indian authorities seeking safe passage for her into Indian airspace. It was not immediately known whether she made a technical stopover in India but sources said her final destination is London.
Sources underlined that it was her team which reached out to Indian authorities, adding that the aircraft used was that of the Bangladesh Army and that this was not a rescue operation.
The Government of India had not responded to the developments at the time of publishing this report.
This is an updated version of the report.
