New Delhi: Members of the Security Council Friday reiterated their full support for the work of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General.
According to a press statement by the agency, the Security Council reaffirmed its strong commitment to Afghanistan’s sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and national unity and its ongoing support for the Afghan people.
They acknowledged the ongoing need to address Afghanistan’s multifaceted challenges, including humanitarian, economic, social, developmental, security, terrorist, narcotics, dialogue, governance, rule-of-law, human rights, women’s-rights, and minority-rights issues, while noting that terrorism “in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to peace and security in Afghanistan, as well as in the world.”
Security Council members expressed concern about the Taliban’s policies and practices restricting women and girls’ human rights in Afghanistan, which negatively impacts peace, stability, and development.
They recalled Security Council resolution 2681 (2023), and emphasized the need to ensure the full, equal, meaningful and safe participation of women and girls in Afghanistan for the country’s future and long-term development.
