Pakistan in dire need of LNG after fresh Hormuz tension disrupts fuel supply

Pakistan is urgently seeking to purchase a shipment of liquefied natural gas after fresh hostilities in the Strait of Hormuz again disrupted supplies.

State-owned Pakistan LNG issued a tender to buy a cargo for delivery on July 15-16, with offers due Friday, according to a notice on its website. The tender was approved by the government on Wednesday after a shipment from Qatar scheduled for this month was canceled, according to traders with knowledge of the matter, asking not to be identified discussing private information.

Traffic through Hormuz has ground to a near halt after the US conducted strikes on Iran for a second day following Iranian attacks on vessels in the waterway, including on an LNG tanker. A ship with a Qatari shipment bound for Pakistan aborted its journey through the strait earlier this week.

Pakistan sourced nearly all of its LNG under long-term contracts with Qatar last year, leaving the South Asian nation grappling with energy shortages since the Middle East conflict erupted in late February. Islamabad has been forced to buy two shipments over the last few weeks from the expensive spot market in an effort stave off a gas shortfall.
