Karachi, Jun 27 (PTI) At least four paramilitary personnel were killed after terrorists rammed a vehicle into a Pakistan Rangers compound and stormed the facility in Karachi on Saturday, officials said.

The attack took place in the compound of the Sindh Paramilitary Rangers in the heavily populated Gulistan-e-Jauhar area.

No terrorist or separatist group has so far claimed responsibility for the brazen attack.

Heavy exchange of gunfire is still ongoing in the compound, which has been cordoned off. All nearby adjoining roads are closed to the public and transport movement.

According to a security force, four to six terrorists attacked the compound around 8.30 pm and were engaged in a gun battle inside the compound.

“So far, we know four Rangers personnel have been killed in the attack and some vehicles destroyed as the compound also serves as a transport hub of the Rangers,” he said.

The source said that Special Security Unit commandos and the Anti-Terrorist Force (ATF) had arrived at the scene to carry out the clean-up operation.

A resident said authorities instructed people to stay inside their houses, and some residential buildings and areas were without power.

Initial investigations suggest the terrorists arrived in a vehicle and entered the compound by ramming the main gate, said Sindh Inspector General of Police Javed Alam Odho, adding that more information is being collected.

Odho said an explosion had been heard when the attack began; however, its cause has not been determined yet.

“What is confirmed is that as soon as the attack took place, the Rangers personnel immediately took positions and engaged these attackers in a gun battle,” he said. PTI CORR GRS GRS GRS GRS
