PORT LOUIS, Oct 13 (Reuters) – Mauritius announced a curfew in some parts of the country on Tuesday night, following unrest over the shooting of a woman by a police officer.

• Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam said in an address to the nation that the curfew would be from 8:30 p.m. (1630 GMT) until 6 a.m. on Wednesday

• The curfew covers the capital Port Louis and other major population centres on the Indian Ocean island, a popular tourist and offshore banking destination where unrest is rare

• Ramgoolam’s cabinet will meet on Wednesday afternoon to assess the situation again

• Protesters burned tyres and blocked roads on Monday night

• A police sergeant has been provisionally charged in connection with the shooting of Élodie Thomas, local media reported, without giving details about what led to the incident

• Thomas was wounded while travelling home from work in a residential area south of the capital

• Health minister Anil Bachoo said Thomas underwent successful surgery to remove a bullet

• Police have said an investigation is under way

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
