New Delhi: President of the United States Joe Biden on Tuesday officially announced his candidacy for a second term at the White House in 2024.
In a tweet, the 80-year-old said: “Every generation has a moment where they have had to stand up for democracy. To stand up for their fundamental freedoms. I believe this is ours. That’s why I’m running for reelection as President of the United States. Join us. Let’s finish the job.”

The three-minute campaign video accompanying Biden’s declaration opened with scenes from the 6 January, 2021 attack on the US Capitol by supports for former President Donald Trump.
Biden is heard saying in the background: “Freedom, personal freedom is fundamental to who we are as Americans. That’s been the work of my first term. To fight for our democracy. To protect our rights, to make sure that everyone in this country is treated equally…”
He continues: “When I ran for president four years ago, I said we’re in a battle for the soul of America, and we still are… This is not a time to be complacent. That’s why I’m running for re-election.” “Let’s finish this job. I know we can,” he said.
Biden called the Republicans a threat to American freedom, and said he was determined to fight efforts to limit women’s healthcare, cut Social Security and ban books. He also condemned “MAGA extremists” – or “Make America Great Again”, the political slogan of Trump.
Trump may well be Biden’s republican opponent in the November 2024 polls.
