New Delhi: Former US president Bill Clinton and American author James Patterson will release their second crime novel, two years after the duo made their debut in 2018.

Titled The President’s Daughter, the new book revolves around the kidnapping of a daughter of an American president who lives in New Hampshire.

On Friday, Patterson tweeted saying: “Working with Bill Clinton has been a highlight of my career and I’m thrilled to have the chance to write with him again.”

Their first book was The President is Missing that was released in 2018 and sold more than three million copies. It is a White House drama that centres around cybercrime, espionage and a traitor in the cabinet. A US president becomes a suspect and then goes missing. The novel is set in real time and spans over the course of just three days.

New book not a sequel to first

Set to release in June 2021, the new novel will be a standalone work instead of a sequel to the first, with a whole new set of cast and characters. A summary of the novel reveals that the plot deals with a president wanting to lay low after losing his second term, but an imminent threat to his daughter who has been kidnapped forces him back into action.

Clinton’s daughter Chealsea had also stayed with him and his wife Hillary Clinton at the White House during his presidency.

“I never imagined I’d be writing a book with a master storyteller like Jim, much less two. I believe readers will enjoy reading The President’s Daughter as much as I’m enjoying working on it,” Clinton said in the announcement released by the publishers, Knopf and Little, Brown.

With Clinton’s knowledge of how the US government functions and the intricacies of presidency, combined with Patterson’s stellar career and his engaging storytelling style, the new novel has already set a high standard.

Their first novel had received raving reviews with The New York Times calling it’s characters brimming “with humanity, character and stoicism”. Reviewer Nicolle Wallace had described the novel’s biggest strength in the depiction of “the selfless and often nameless people who work in government — and are willing to lose their lives — because they are compelled to serve their nation”.

Besides crime novels, both Clinton and Patterson have written other books individually too. The former president has his post-presidential 2004 best-selling memoir My Life in his name, while Patterson has written Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider, among others.

Patterson is also one of world’s top earning authors, according to Forbes that had put his net worth at $94 million earlier.
