For three decades, India’s $225-billion IT services sector powered economic growth, middle-class jobs, and consumption. But slowing global outsourcing and the rise of AI are now weakening this engine. Economist Saurabh Mukherjea explains why the shift could slow consumption and pressure the rupee but also open a major opportunity for export-led manufacturing.
