Full marks to the editors of the TIME magazine who keep their ears to the ground – – even in far off lands like India. Long live their breed!
But “Divider” is a wrong word to use in the present context. When you divide something into two or more portions, the assumption is that the divided portions retain their equal IDENTITY . Like dividing a cake into two pieces, or dividing a class of school boys to make two cricket teams, etc. If you divide the cake into two in such a manner that the second portion only consists of crumps, or divide the class into two in such a way that one part consists of all the good players, then it’s not really ‘division’ – – it’s destruction.
My analogy may not be wholly satisfactory, but I am trying to say that Modi is not dividing Indian society but destroying it. He and his ruling coterie are Hindu extremists, therefore the Muslim masses stand to be meted out second-class-citizen treatment compared to the Hindu masses. Over time it will completely destroy the social fabric of India. It’s not that the Muslims are less capable than the Hindus in any way, but UNEQUAL OPPORTUNITIES will dishearten them and widen the chasm. I’m sure that won’t happen; long live God.
